Admission to Year 7 involves a two-stage testing process that forms part of the coordinated system used by Sutton grammar schools.
The Selective Eligibility Test (SET)
Stage One: Selective Eligibility Test (SET)
This is a shared exam with other grammar schools in Sutton and includes two multiple-choice papers. Applicants must meet the pass mark in both papers to qualify for Stage Two. SET scores are not used in final rankings but determine who progresses.
Paper 1: Maths
Key Stage 2 problem-solving, lasting between 40-50 minutes.
Paper 2: English
Multiple choice paper expected to last 40 – 50 minutes, testing reading comprehension and vocabulary.
The Selective Eligibility Test (SET) - Assessment Criteria
| English | Maths | Verbal Reasoning | Non-Verbal Reasoning | Addittional |

Nonsuch and Wallington Second Stage Entrance Examination (NWSSEE)
Those who pass the SET are invited to sit two written papers:
Paper 1: English
Extended writing task expected to last 1 hour
Paper 2: Maths
Standard KS2 level Maths paper expected to last 45 minutes
Nonsuch and Wallington Second Stage Entrance Examination (NWSSEE) - Assessment Criteria

Pass Mark
Selective Eligibility Test (SET): Pass Criteria
Results are emailed about a week after the test. There is no set pass mark, as the threshold changes each year based on overall performance. Around 25–30% of applicants typically qualify for the Second Stage Test.
Nonsuch and Wallington Second Stage Entrance Examination (NWSSEE): Pass Criteria
Candidates must pass both English and Maths papers to be eligible. Final rankings are based on a combined score using full marks from the NWSSEE and half from the SET. Wallington High School for Girls is highly selective, offering places to the highest-scoring applicants.
Catchment Area
Wallington High School for Girls does not have a catchment area. However, distance from the school can be used to decide between candidates with equal scores.
Additional Eligibility
To be considered for a place, applicants must pass both the SET and the Nonsuch and Wallington Second Stage Entrance Examination (NWSSEE). If more candidates qualify than there are places available, offers are made in this order:
-
Children with an Education, Health and Care Plan naming the school
-
Looked after or previously looked after children who meet the qualifying standard
-
Up to 100 candidates ranked by overall test score (regardless of address)
-
Up to 35 candidates eligible for Pupil Premium who meet the standard or score within 20% of it
-
Up to 110 candidates living within 6.7 km of the school ranked by score
If places remain, they are offered to the next highest-ranking applicants. In the event of a tie, distance from the school is used as a tiebreaker.
